Small Group Questions
1. In this encounter, James and John displayed self-centered ambition in several ways (entitlement, pursuit of prominence, overconfidence, etc.). Which of these do you see most clearly in your own heart, and how does it tend to show up in your daily life? 2. In this passage, Jesus contrasts worldly greatness with kingdom greatness. How would you describe the world’s definition of greatness today? In what ways have you been tempted to adopt that definition?
3. Jesus doesn’t condemn the exercise of authority in this text, just the misuse of it. How can you tell whether you are using your influence and authority to serve others or to serve yourself? 4. Jesus says greatness is seen in being a servant. What is one specific, concrete way you can practice humble service this week in your home, workplace, or church? 5. Jesus is the perfect model of self-sacrificing service, especially in giving His life as a ransom. How does reflecting on Christ’s sacrifice reshape your attitude toward serving others?

• How is God using you in the process of evangelism to draw people up Himself?
